Between Hunger & Devotion
Oh, how some hands build altars
only to sharpen their knives.
Oh and they call it worship,
until the itch is quenched.
What they crowned,
they bury.
What they chased,
they weary.
Some build thrones
with restless hands,
then curse the height
at which you stand.
In these days, man can lust after a woman
the same way he lusts after a throne;
not because he honors it,
but because he longs to own.
And betwixt hunger and devotion,
I learned this truth:
’Tis not the measure of one’s reaching
that proveth the worth of his affection,
for many a hand may stretch toward thee,
yet knoweth not
how to hold thee.
For some kneel in awe
only to conquer.
